Aquarion Water Company is officially now the Aquarion Water Authority following the successful completion of the transaction on June 30, 2026.
This historic transition establishes a new, public not-for-profit water authority dedicated to providing high-quality, reliable water services to communities across the state.
New Era of Aquarion
The new authority structure is designed to leverage local, not-for-profit governance while maintaining the high standards of operations customers rely on.
New Operational Model
Community-Focused Board: The water utility is now overseen by a board of representatives from the towns it serves, rather than private corporate shareholders.
Best Practice Sharing: AWA and its sister utility, the Regional Water Authority(RWA), will share best practices and management resources to increase operational efficiency, procurement synergies, and environmental stewardship, as well as provide strong, localized public control.
Rate Stabilization Fund: As part of this transaction's approval, customers will see funds directed to a newly established Rate Stabilization Fund.
Rate Case Withdrawal: Aquarion is officially withdrawing its pending $88 million revenue request and 42% rate hike application. There will be no rate increases for the remainder of 2026.
Future Rate Tracking: Long-term projections estimate annual rate adjustments starting in 2027 to cover public infrastructure debt. However, future rates will now be governed locally by an independent Representative Policy Board rather than by PURA.
Customer Assistance Programs: All existing Aquarion customer protection measures, including the Low-Income Rate Assistance Program (LIRAP), Voucher Program, and flexible payment plans, remain fully active.
